Breathe @ the Beach!

The Physical & Mental Health Benefits of exercising outdoors and by the beach can’t get much better, unless that exercise is Pilates!!!!

When I heard we were going ahead with a session down by the beach to see out the New Year in an amazingly way, I couldn’t have been more excited. The beach for me has always been my sanctuary, my church, my meditation, where wrongs are righted, clarity found, spirits heightened, my breath a little fuller and deeper& a connection with myself reignited. After a little research I now understand why I feel so damn good after a time out/ run/ walk/ Pilates session by the water.

Ayurevedais a traditional Chinese medicine and an ancient Indian Medicinal wisdom that states the element Water is crucial to balancing the body & creating physical and mental harmony.

Our sense of Calm, Clarity, Insight & Happiness can be attributed to a hardwiring of the brain, to react positively to water, “being near water can calm and connect us, increase innovation, & insight, and even heal what is broken” - Wallace J. Nicholas -author of Blue Mind.

Further research lead me to an article published in the Environmental Science & Technology Journal, namely “What is the best dose of nature & Green Exercise for improving Mental Health? A Multi-study Analysis.” Within the article, ‘Green Exercising’ refers to any exercise that is done with the presence of nature. According to their conclusions, it can take only 5 Minutes of activity outdoors in the presence of nature to have not only an Immediate but also lasting effect on your Mental Health & when the presence of nature is water, the effect is even greater!

And now for some ‘sciencey’ stuff!!! Research suggests that the negative ions in the sea air can actually accelerate your ability to absorb oxygen, balance serotonin levels - aiding in mood, and reducing stress levels, while also giving out bodies a nice shot of Vitamin D.

We all know the huge mental and physical benefits of committed and consistent Pilates practice, now multiply that with the benefits of performing that class by the beach, listening to the meditative rhythmic sounds of the waves crashing near by, what better way to let go of 2016 and embrace with an open mind and heart all that is to come in 2017! Bring on the deep relaxation, the stress reduction, the increased happiness, the peace of mind and the heighten creativity, come at me 2017, I’ll be ready!!!
